How could a city in Brazil have such a mix of cultural influences? Established in 1612 by the colonial French, only three years later São Luiz was reclaimed by Portugal. The Dutch occupation in the 17th century also lasted only three years. And then, during the 19th century, São Luiz was home to the third largest African population in Brazil.

But the Portuguese, first and foremost, were the ones whose legacy is felt the most in Sao Luiz. Four centuries of influence are found in the steep and narrow streets paved with cobblestones (sometimes square, called paralelepípedos; sometimes rough-hewn, called pé-de-moleque rocks), as well as the fabulous complex of buildings that today form a historic centre whose architecture preserves the history of the capital. In 1997, this part of town was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Joining us in this task of presenting Sao Luiz’s treasures is Sandra de Miranda Rodrigues and her team at Sacada Turismo. Because ecotourism labels are sometimes used in an unprofessional manner (companies make money while exploiting the potential of a given region without real concern for the people or place), Sacada Turismo came into existence as a responsible adventure tourism company in São Luiz. “We believe that the enterprise of tourism is a chain of solidarity and the relationship must always be on a win-win basis,” reinforces Sandra.

Mas por que uma cidade no Brasil tem tantas influências culturais? Foi fundada em 1612 pelos franceses, numa tentativa de assumir uma colônia na América do Sul. E apenas três anos mais tarde São Luiz foi tomada por Portugal. A ocupação holandesa no século 17 também durou três anos. Durante o século 19, São Luiz tinha abrigado a terceira maior população do Brasil Africano.

Mas foram os Portugueses, em primeiro lugar, que estiveram fortemente presentes que deixaram o seu legado em São Luiz. Os quatro séculos de influência deixaram além das encostas e ruas estreitas feitas de pedras ‘pé-de-moleque’ e paralelepípedos, um fabuloso conjunto de edifícios que formam hoje o centro histórico cuja arquitetura preserva a história da capital. Desde 1997, esta parte da cidade é reconhecida como Patrimônio Mundial da UNESCO.

Junto a nos nesta tarefa de apresentar os tesouros de São esta Sandra Rodrigues e sua equipe da Sacada Turismo.
