Last week, the WHL Group and Spotted by Locals launched the Local Travel Movement, a platform promoting the local way of travel.

The goal in unveiling the website is to rally Local Travel organisations, experts and practitioners with a passion for Local Travel and commitment to the values that underpin it. It is also an opportunity to promote, develop and establish Local Travel as a key trend in 2010.

As expressed on the new site’s Join Us page, we believe that Local Travel is greater than the sum of its parts, and that the Local Travel Movement can be a rallying point through which, “by working together, we can give locals a real voice, engage travellers and develop a dialogue within the travel industry.”

Apparently we’re not alone in thinking this. Although we’ve hinted previously about the onset of this movement, just one short week after a quiet soft launch of the website, word appears to be spreading fast. We’ve added two dozen companies to a list of Local Travel partners and are fielding requests for quite a few more. We think we’ve hit a good nerve.

Are you committed to a kind of travel this is mindful of the local people, local environment, local culture and local economy? If so, please visit www.LocalTravelMovement.com and share your thoughts. We can also be found spreading the word on Facebook, LinkedIn and through a Twitter group.
