Urban Adventures Named Best Travel Startup of the Year

On April 29, at the 2010 Travel Distribution Summit Asia in Singapore, a Web Innovation Award for Best Travel Startup of the Year was awarded to Urban Adventures. Urban Adventures, which was also shortlisted in the Most Exciting New Use of Technology in Travel category, was launched in October 2009 and has quickly grown into a global force, recently featured on Getaway, Australia’s favourite travel show.

I had spent the week in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, visiting the lodges in the area. Whilst I was waiting for my flight back to Kampala, a group of enthusiastic children appeared on the airstrip. All of the children I have met in Uganda like to ball their hands into fists, shouting ‘bonga!’ when they greet you. As the plane was slightly delayed, we spent a happy hour taking photos with my camera… and lots of ‘bonga!’ poses!

Big Push to Protect Children

While we are enjoying the grand temples of Vientiane, the mighty Mekong region and the towering limestone karst scenery of Laos, there is a big problem that needs our attention. Where there is poverty and large numbers of relatively affluent visitors, sadly there are also opportunistic exploiters of children.
