The province of Xieng Khouang is found in the peaceful northeast of Laos. Despite being one of the Lao areas most heavily bombed by the Americans during the Vietnam War (known in the region as the Indochina War), Xieng Khouang boasts stunning untouched landscapes with rolling hills, lush pine forests and deep valleys.

Remote though it is, as time passes, more and more visitors have made the journey here, as it has become famous for its mysterious Plain of Jars. These jars, some as tall as 3.25 metres, were carved out of the solid rock quarried from the surrounding mountains, but the reason why is not clear, explanations offered by both local legends and archaeologists. The large jars are still largely intact and sprinkled by the hundred in several sites around the region.

While spending time in Phonsavan, the region’s capital and biggest town, visitors can go see the three main jar sites in the region, each as mesmerizing as the next. Jar site 1 or Thong Hai Hin is the nearest to the city and contains the largest jar. Jar site 2 or Hai Hin Phu Salato (also known as Table Hill) has majestic views and was once a favourite picnic ground of the colonial French. Jar site 3 or Hai Hin Lat Khai, located on a hilltop overlooking valley farmlands, is the most distant but also considered the most attractive site. Travellers can also visit the Buddhist temple located in the small farming village by the entrance.

In Phonsavan, visitors can choose from a wide array of Phonsavan hotels and guesthouses, from budget accommodation to high-end hotels and resorts. Once checked in, travellers can make a plan for uncovering the many things to see and do in Xieng Khouang, including shopping for local products and dining in local restaurants. The simplicity of the town’s culture and people are instantly appealing.

Teamworkz reservation staff, Phansee, returns to his family's home province of Xieng Khouang, Laos, to help a data-collection team uncover the secrets of the Plain of Jars. While three Plain of Jars sites are currently open to the public, there are an estimated 80 sites throughout the province.
