Photo of the Week: A Winter’s Day in Republic Square, Buenos Aires, Argentina

It is common to read in travel blogs the advice that September is not the most recommended month to visit Buenos Aires. This is usually because of the weather. It is winter in the southern hemisphere and can be very cold; the wind can rip at your face and it is a month without major events in the city.

But the weather was one of the main reasons that my girlfriend and I decided to go there for the weekend. We’re not used to low temperatures and a visit to Buenos Aires in the winter was something new and romantic.

September is the end of the high season. The streets and places are quite empty. You can walk around freely and visit museums without having to face long queues. It’s very different to the high season, when the city is invaded, mostly by Brazilian holidaymakers.

I took this picture on a Sunday morning, very early. The streets were virtually deserted. I had time to stop in the middle of the busiest avenue, take the camera out of my bag, look around, think about the framework and shoot. I used a Canon PowerShot A560, shutter speed 1/400 sec, ISO 200.

Because of the cold weather, the sky was absolutely blue.
