Re-learning Community Through Traditional Maasai Skills

“Raw.” The simple, but evocative word Susan Fanning chooses to describe Africa. After spending a good chunk of her life on the continent (eleven years), native Irishwoman Susan decided to return once again and continue her love affair with the country and its people. This time, she spent it within the Maasai community through a Maasai Warrior Training program put together by Laura Alessandrini and Silas Kitonga. Silas is a Maasai from Il ‘Ngwesi, the area where Maasai Warrior Training takes place. The eponymous Il ‘Ngwesi Lodge also happens to be the site of a documentary, Milk the Rhino, which focuses on community conservation by the Maasai.

This is a picture of the bar-headed goose, a migratory bird that spends part of its year in and around the Lashi Lake nature reserve to the west of Lijiang city in the Yunnan Province of China. During winter time, from November to March, thousands of migratory birds from northern China and Siberia flock to Lashi Lake for the winter. The Lake provides a very nice, warm, safe environment with enough food for all the birds.

A View from the Fringe of the World Travel Market 2010

With the milestone of the 2010 World Travel Market (WTM) now fading into memory, many who attended or were involved to some degree are left asking a single question: Where did 2010 go? Time has absolutely flown by since last year’s event. I didn’t attend the WTM this year, but was involved in several of the large number of peripheral events, like the WTM Fringe Networking event.

The World Responsible Tourism Programme Encourages Action at the World Travel Market

This year at the World Travel Market, responsible tourism made its way from a niche-market corner into the mainstream. The BBC World sponsored the World Responsible Tourism Programme (WRTP), which included a series of seminars on some of the major topics within tourism and sustainability. The Programme culminated with World Responsible Tourism Day on Wednesday November 10, when the much-anticipated 2010 Responsible Tourism Awards were handed out.

This picture was taken on a tour to the oldest part of Lisbon called Alfama. It was not on the main day – June 13 – when the annual feast of St. Antonio is celebrated, but some days later. June in Lisbon is the month of animation, celebration and parties, all of which are held in the street. The streets retain the festive appearance you see here for the whole month.
