This photograph shows a woman tending her stall in one of Belgrade‘s famous green markets, or pijaca as they are known locally. The selling of produce – often grown in the area immediately around the city – is a practice that goes back generations and is one that has been barely affected by advances in technology. Open air markets are a tradition, but also an everyday necessity for many.
The range of goods on sales at the average market is always impressive. Basic fruits and vegetables are, of course, commonplace, but stalls selling sweets and treats, such as the one pictured above, are also easily found.
It’s possible to get a great bargain on most products, if you’re a shrewd negotiator, whether you’re shopping for ingredients to include in an evening meal, or just looking for a snack to keep your energy up while exploring Belgrade.
The Zeleni Venac pijaca is one of the largest and most popular markets in Belgrade. It is very centrally located and is easily found using the city’s public transport system. The hustle and bustle of buying and selling makes it a vibrant and exciting place to explore, even if you aren’t looking to buy.
