Photo of the Week: Flora in Full Bloom During the Rainy Season in Nabaoy, The Philippines

This photograph was taken during the rainy season along the Nabaoy River, just a stone’s throw by boat from Boracay island in the Philippines. The flower, brought to life along with others of virtually every colour by the seasonal deluges, belongs to the terrestrial family of orchids, one of the many pretty flora planted along the banks of the Nabaoy.

Ask any youth from the Western hemisphere to name their favorite hip-hop artists and they will probably rattle off a few names that come to mind. Ask their parents and grandparents and you would likely be met with a blank stare. Younger generations have come to assume that this culture gulf is wide and incapable of being bridged. Nasanbat, a 52 year old Mongolian woman, however, can name the first hip-hop song that became popular in Mongolia, a few of the bands and artists around town, and is probably more tuned into the industry than any Western youth. She is not the exception. In fact, in Mongolia, older generations know all about hip-hop.

Floods Cripple Pakistan

Flooding triggered by exceptionally heavy monsoon rains has claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people in Pakistan during the last three weeks. A country already deeply troubled by ongoing violence and political unrest, Pakistan must now deal with the anguish of up to 20 million people affected by high waters that have washed away crops and destroyed entire villages. More than 4 million people are without homes and up to 3.5 million children are living under the constant threat of water-borne illnesses.
