<p>Their practice in experiential and mindful travel and their locals&#8217; knack for identifying, explaining and sustaining the distinctive qualities of a place make them the perfect go-to people for travellers looking for unique ways to experience a destination. But sometimes, when travellers prepare to hit the road, they&#8217;re not choosy about where they want to go: they&#8217;re actively looking only for the best of the best – the best experiences in the best destinations based on information from the best travel experts.</p>
<p>To facilitate that process, whl.travel has announced the winners of its 2011 internal competitive performance review. Based on their work in 2011, four tour operators – one from each of four broad geographical areas – have been singled out as models for a set of whl.travel standards critical to the operation of their own businesses but also fundamental to the success of the global network. Assessment criteria included response times and customer service, maintaining an active social media presence and keeping destination Web portals up to date.</p>

<h3>Malawi Triumphs in Africa</h3>
<p>In <a title="whl.travel: Africa" href="http://www.whl.travel/destination/africa" target="_blank">Africa</a>, whl.travel is anchored in about 40 destinations across 20 countries. Taking honors on this continent was the Responsible Safari Company, the <a title="whl.travel Malawi" href="http://www.explore-malawi.com" target="_blank">whl.travel local connection for Malawi</a>. Apart from demonstrating a strong commitment to community development through <a title="The Travel Word: community based-tourism in Malawi" href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2011/04/18/a-most-memorable-day-community-based-tourism-in-malawi/" target="_blank">sustainable tourism initiatives</a>, they have proven that they are serious about client services.</p>

<h3>The Philippines Shine in Asia and the Pacific</h3>
<p>The whl.travel local partners in Nepal, the Philippines and northeast India stood out from the mix of more than 70 destinations in 26 countries in <a title="whl.travel Asia" href="http://www.whl.travel/destination/asia" target="_blank">Asia</a> and <a title="whl.travel Oceania" href="http://www.whl.travel/destination/oceania" target="_blank">Oceania</a>; however, it was the Philippines&#8217; Go Discover Travels, one of the first partners to join the whl.travel network, that came out on top for their <a title="whl.travel Boracay" href="http://www.boracay.travel" target="_blank">whl.travel Boracay Travel website</a>. They also manage portals in the <a title="The Travel Word:Philippines" href="http://www.thetravelword.com/category/countries/philippines/" target="_blank">Philippines</a> for Cebu, Palawan and Manila.</p>

<p>The whl.travel local connection in <a title="whl.travel Santa Marta, Colombia" href="http://www.santamarta-hotels-tours.travel" target="_blank">Santa Marta</a>, Colombia, was crowned the winner in the Americas, where there are about 50 whl.travel destinations in 15 countries in <a title="whl.travel South America" href="http://www.whl.travel/destination/south_america" target="_blank">Latin America</a> and the <a title="whl.travel Caribbean" href="http://www.whl.travel/destination/caribbean" target="_blank">Caribbean</a>. The site for <a title="The Travel Word: Santa Marta, Colombia" href="http://www.thetravelword.com/tag/santa-marta/" target="_blank">Santa Marta</a> is owned and operated by Las Pleyades, a small company that is a big player when it comes to developing social and environmental travel.</p>

<h3>An Award for Quality Websites</h3>
<p>Unlike most travel awards, the Caribbean Web Awards 2012 focused on the websites that represent the travel companies, not on the travel companies themselves. As stated on the <a title="Caribbean Web Awards 2012" href="http://www.travelmole.com/awards.php?c=setreg&amp;region=2" target="_blank">Caribbean Web Awards 2012 website</a>, special attention was given to best practices in online marketing with an eye toward recognizing websites with excellent graphic communication, superb online copy and salesmanship, and laudable examples of strategies and techniques for enhanced site conversion.</p>
<p>Through its <a title="The Travel Word: Gunyah Launches Locally Inspired Short Breaks Around the Globe" href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2011/10/04/gunyah-launches-locally-inspired-short-breaks-around-the-globe/" target="_blank">recently launched online presence</a>, designed with all of this in mind, Gunyah dishes up memorable short-break package holidays and vacations managed by a dedicated network of passionate people all around the world. With locals in every destination and a clear <a title="Gunyah: Responsible Travel" href="http://www.gunyah.com/responsible_travel" target="_blank">responsible travel vision</a>, Gunyah is more in tune with what makes a truly authentic local travel experience.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to convey the authenticity and inspiration of our short breaks from the moment users started researching their trips, something that combined the spontaneity of independent travel with the comfort of a package holiday,&#8221; commented Luke Ford, CEO of Gunyah, about the unique look and feel of Gunyah.com. &#8220;The experience begins from the moment they start corresponding with our local operators. We wanted the navigation functionality to be simple and so it&#8217;s <a title="Gunyah destinations" href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions" target="_blank">search by destination</a>, but we also wanted to include a <a title="Gunyah experiences" href="http://www.gunyah.com/experiences" target="_blank">search by experiences</a> for those looking for, for example, diving or a cultural break. <h3>A Work in Progress</h3>
<p>At the present time, Gunyah lists 170 <a title="The Travel Word: Real Gunyah-Style Local Travel" href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2011/02/18/real-gunyah-style-local-travel/" target="_blank">short-break package holidays</a> in 46 countries with an additional 600 contracted or under construction. Gunyah is working with 83 local partners in a total of 78 countries, including developed markets in <a title="Gunyah vacations in North America" href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions/north-america-vacations" target="_blank">North America</a>, <a title="Gunyah holidays in Europe " href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions/europe-holidays" target="_blank">Europe</a> and <a title="Gunyah tours in Australia" href="http://www.gunyah.com/country/australia-tours" target="_blank">Australia</a>, and emerging-market economies across <a title="Gunyah travel in Africa" href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions/africa-travel" target="_blank">Africa</a>, <a title="Gunyah travel in Asia" href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions/asia-travel" target="_blank">Asia</a>, <a title="Gunyah tours in South America" href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions/south-america-tours" target="_blank">South America</a> and elsewhere.</p>
<p>The short breaks – all of which consist of carefully selected accommodation, tours and activities – average four to six days in duration, but can also extend to 12 days. Regardless of length, Gunyah&#8217;s goal is to evoke an authentic experience through each package by connecting travelers to the people, communities, food and culture of each destination.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are only at the early stages with product development in the <a title="Gunyah vacation packages in the Caribbean" href="http://www.gunyah.com/regions/caribbean-vacation-packages" target="_blank">Caribbean</a>, but this attention from the Caribbean Web Awards provides us with even more motivation to include more fascinating destinations in the region,&#8221; added Ford. &#8220;We have some amazing <a title="Gunyah vacation packages in the Bahamas " href="http://www.gunyah.com/country/bahamas-vacation-packages" target="_blank">experiences in San Salvador, Bahamas</a>, with diving, fishing, nature and eco walks, history and adventure, something for everyone! Our local partners in the Bahamas deserve credit for all of their hard work developing such unique experiences.&#8221;</p>

<h3>The Winning Announcement</h3>
<p>The TravelMole Caribbean Web Award winners were announced on the eve of the Caribbean Marketplace held in Nassau, Paradise Island, Bahamas. In their second year, the awards were run by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association in association with TravelMole, one of the largest online travel trade communities in the world, and LeadGenerators, the UK&#8217;s specialist online marketing agency for the travel industry.</p>
<p>The awards were presented by TravelMole’s Graham McKenzie, who praised the shortlisted websites but called for a stronger focus on online marketing within the Caribbean: &#8220;With the obvious exception of the shortlisted sites, the general standard of nominations were very poor and for the benefit of all really needs to improve. The importance of a good online presence for all tourism businesses cannot be overstated and at this time many do not make the most of the opportunities presented.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Share your travel story and win a holiday! &#8220;The only footprint you leave is your story!&#8221; Such were the excellent sentiments of the <a href="http://www.mynatour.org/contest/ecotourism-travel-blog" target="_blank">Ecotourism Travel Blog Contest</a> when it was launched in September of 2011 by MyNatour, an online community of people who believe in healthy, authentic and responsible tourism.</p>

<p>Such too were the reasons why <a href="http://www.whl.travel" target="_blank">whl.travel</a>, the global online travel-booking network of mindful local travel experts, stepped up to sponsor it, working from within its extensive network of local partners to find fitting ecotourism prize material for the winners.</p>
<p>Participants were given a limit of 1,000 words and five evocative photographs through which to tell their stories. They were also required to provide tips about ecotourism in their selected destinations or reflections about how they might help better preserve that particular destination through ecotourism practices.</p>

<p>And now the winners have been identified. From <a href="http://www.mynatour.org/contest/ecotourism-travel-blog?quicktabs_10=1#quicktabs-10" target="_blank">dozens of submissions</a>, a shortlist of 10 finalists (determined by public vote) was reviewed by a panel of judges that included representatives from The International Ecotourism Society (TIES), Tourism Concern, MyNatour and the WHL Group, the parent company of whl.travel.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2010/12/28/the-travel-word-team-stepping-out-of-the-shadows/#ethan" target="_blank">Ethan Gelber</a>, the Chief Communication Officer of the WHL Group, said (see the video directly below) that he was looking for three qualities when determining the best of the ecotourism travel blog contest finalists: the first was &#8220;how much time and effort was taken by the person to think about what an ecotourism experience is&#8221;; the second was &#8220;how carefully they made a choice of the experience they wanted to live through&#8221;; and the third was &#8220;whether or not the experience was as rich as they thought it would be.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;We are aware that our work has just begun, and we have so many plans for the future. We hope that we will be able to attract a growing number of independent travellers to Montenegro, to explore new markets. But we still have a lot to learn – the whole project is a big learning exercise for our team,&#8221; said Slavica Vukcevic, Executive Director of Montenegro Adventures. &#8220;The plan is to expand by working with a much larger number of accommodation providers, and to add various other products and services, but also we would like to post more content about different regions, traditions, culture, events, etc. We have been listening intently to all the feedback we received from our clients and will respond to many of the given suggestions in the next year.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Wild and Beautiful</h3>
<p>First organized in 2005 by the <a href="http://www.montenegro.travel" target="_blank">National Tourism Organization of Montenegro</a> under the auspices of the President of Montenegro, the <a href="http://www.mt.gov.me/ministarstvo/102145/Saopstenje-Odrzana-dodjela-godisnjih-nagrada-u-turizmu-Wild-Beauty-Award-2010.html" target="_blank">Wild Beauty Award</a> was created with the aim of improving the image of Montenegro by promoting excellence and raising the quality of the county&#8217;s tourism sector. The awards cover everything from hotels, tourism companies and campaigns to events, projects, websites and more.</p>
<p>The 2010 award ceremony was held in the Government House (Vladin Dom) of Cetinje, the historic capital of <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2010/01/09/rediscovering-the-cultural-treasures-of-old-royal-montenegro/" target="_blank">Old Royal Montenegro</a>. The building was built in 1910, the same year in which Montenegro was proclaimed a kingdom, making the awards of 2010 part of a centennial celebration.</p>
<p>Despite the importance of the year, the awards this year were relatively understated. In a break from routine, the National Tourism Organization decided to donate part of the resources budgeted for this occasion to the <a href="http://wikitravel.org/en/Rijeka_Crnojevica" target="_blank">Rijeka Crnojevica</a> community, which suffered terribly during recent floods.</p>

<h3>Montenegro Adventures</h3>
<p>Montenegro Adventures was established by the <a href="http://www.cstimontenegro.org" target="_blank">Centre for Sustainable Tourism Initiatives</a> (CSTI), a local Montenegrin NGO founded as a lasting actor in the development and promotion of tourism in Montenegro. CSTI went on to develop more than 40 unique tours, most of them adventure-based or eco-cultural in orientation, some in remote parts of the country; high-quality promotional materials; and strong partnerships on the ground with local communities, national government bodies and key organisations abroad.</p>
<p>As demand for CSTI-developed tourism products grew, two needs were identified. First, independent travellers and small groups were asking to travel, but, second, &#8220;All of our tours were just sitting around unused,&#8221; said Vukcevic. &#8220;We had tested the tours – advertised them, taken a few people and journalists on them – and we thought local operators would carry on the tours. But they didn’t.&#8221; And so, Montenegro Adventures was born.</p>
<p>Whereas CSTI is an NGO that develops responsible and sustainable tourism products, Montenegro Adventures is a for-profit tourism agency that sells those products. However, their desired end result – using <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2009/06/10/summer-in-the-balkans-montenegro/" target="_blank">sustainable and responsible travel practices</a> to improve the quality of life in Montenegro, preserve cultural heritage and protect the environment – is refreshingly the same.</p>
<p>Montenegro Adventures went on to sign a contract with the International Finance Corporation (IFC is a member of the World Bank Group) and <a href="http://www.whl.travel" target="_blank">whl.travel</a>, for which it is the local partner in Montenegro and oversees three accommodation- and tour-booking destination portals covering Montenegro&#8217;s capital city of <a href="http://www.travel-podgorica.com" target="_blank">Podgorica and its surrounding mountains</a>, the elegant seaside <a href="http://www.travel-budva.com" target="_blank">Budva and southern Montenegro</a> and the <a href="http://www.travel-kotor.com" target="_blank">Bay of Kotor</a>.</p>

<h3>Looking Ahead</h3>
<p>It was &#8220;during our work on these destination-management portals that we realized how important it is to cooperate with different institutions and businesses,&#8221; explained Vukcevic. &#8220;So far we have invested huge effort in travelling throughout Montenegro, working on different products and services, and working with different accommodation providers. In 2011, we plan to focus on transfers and tours, but also we would like to continue supporting the efforts of local tourism organisations and event organisers to promote local traditional events throughout Montenegro.&#8221;</p>
<p>As a young but conscientious company with lots of momentum, Montenegro Adventures is also committed to improving the business environment in Montenegro. &#8220;We are a relatively new company (almost a startup), but we think helping to streamline administrative processes and promote operational improvements for the benefit of all small and medium enterprises is a must,&#8221; concluded Vukcevic. &#8220;For that reason, we are actively participating in several working groups organised by the National Tourism Organization or the Ministry of Tourism, such as the Hiking and Biking Development Project, the Montenegro Convention Bureau and, lately, the MOA (a very informal name for a group of Montenegrin outdoor agencies). We have also recently been recognized by SNV (the Dutch Development Organization) as one of their &#8216;local capacity builders&#8217; – trainers/consultants active in different projects related to enhancing the economic potential and capacity building of small enterprises in the tourism sector.&#8221;</p>

Each year, one individual and one organisation will be honoured for contributions, best practices and, of course, leadership as judged on the basis of one example of an innovative project, product or program developed in the previous year that advocates for uniting communities, conservation and sustainable travel.</p>
<h3>WHL Consulting in the Mix</h3>
<p>The <a href="http://www.whl-group.com" target="_blank">WHL Group</a> is pleased to learn that one of its subsidiary companies, WHL Consulting, has been selected as a 2010 Innovation Award finalist for creation of the <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2010/08/04/whl-consulting-launches-tourism-development-bank-as-solution-to-finance-obstacles-faced-by-small-businesses/" target="_blank">Tourism Development Bank</a>, &#8220;a leveraged, barter-based, payment-facilitation platform&#8230; that lets accommodation providers pay for market-access, clean-energy and other services with room nights instead of cash.&#8221;</p>
<p>As described in the <a href="http://www.yourtravelchoice.org/2010/08/2010-innovation-award-finalist-whl-consulting/" target="_blank">nomination of WHL Consulting</a>: &#8220;Typically it is hard for small businesses, primarily in the hospitality sector, to collateralize their assets (i.e. their rooms stock) and/or gain access to finance from traditional lenders (especially in the developing world). High energy costs and a lack of market access due to insufficient e-commerce/online competitiveness are critical constraints to their long-term financial sustainability.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Tourism Development Bank is, therefore, an elegant means of overcoming this key business constraint faced by many small and medium-sized enterprises: access to finance. Without money, essential (and beneficial) business buoys, such as market access tools and services, and retrofits or renovations to reduce energy consumption and operating costs, often go unfunded. The businesses are seen as being either too small and risky for commercial banks or too large and not poor enough for micro-finance institutions and donors.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">&#8220;We have been working quite hard over the past six months in several pilot destinations, like <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2009/12/17/south-africa-tourism-gets-a-4-5-million-rand-boost-for-a-future-beyond-soccer/" target="_blank">South Africa</a>, <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2010/02/16/whl-consulting-continues-its-work-in-world-heritage-sites-with-a-focus-on-tequila/" target="_blank">Mexico</a> and <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/2010/03/22/innovative-online-market-access-program-promises-new-opportunities-to-tourism-in-ouro-preto-brazil/" target="_blank">Brazil</a> and always felt that what we were doing was really innovative,&#8221; said Zachary Rozga, CEO of WHL Consulting. &#8220;Sometimes when you do this, you get caught up in reflection and just aren&#8217;t exactly sure if what you are doing is going to make sense to outsiders. It is nice to be formally recognised by a prestigious organisation like TIES as being an Innovation Leader. We hope this is just the beginning of a good things to come for the Tourism Development Bank.&#8221;</p>

<p>Momentarily setting aside his attention to the Tourism Development Bank, Rozga will be focusing on a practical model of how micro-franchising allows even the smallest tour operators to compete with big companies on both price and product. This year the <em>Wanderlust</em> team received over 1,000 nominations from which they created a <a href="http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/magazine/awards/wanderlust-world-guide-awards/wanderlust-world-guide-awards-2010?page=all">shortlist of the eight guides</a> they felt were most deserving of this distinguished award.</p>
<h3>Tina Zorman of Yemen</h3>
<p>The WHL Group is very proud to recognise the nomination of <a href="http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/magazine/awards/wanderlust-world-guide-awards/wanderlust-world-guide-awards-2010?page=5">Tina Zorman</a>, our whl.travel local connection in the beautiful unspoiled lands of Yemen. Born in Slovenia, Tina owns and guides for <a href="http://www.eternal-yemen.com" target="_blank">Eternal Yemen</a> with her Yemeni husband (and two children) based out of the country’s fascinating capital city of Sana&#8217;a. Tina feels very much at home with her family in Yemen and takes great pride in showing people this country and introducing them to the traditional Yemeni way of life. It is her desire to challenge the misconceptions people have about this troubled land and help them better understand the Islamic faith.</p>
<p>The World Guide Awards were launched in 2004 in memory of the co-founder of <em>Wanderlust</em>, Paul Morrison, who always felt that tour guides &#8220;were the unsung heroes of the travel industry.&#8221; The <em>Wanderlust</em> team have again welcomed an expert judging panel for these awards, including travel writer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Bryson" target="_blank">Bill Bryson</a>, conservationist <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Carwardine" target="_blank">Mark Carwardine</a> and <em>Wanderlust</em>’s editor-In-chief Lyn Hughes.</p>

<p>Also worthy of mention is <a href="http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/magazine/awards/wanderlust-world-guide-awards/wanderlust-world-guide-awards-2010?page=2">Bruno Dawson</a>, a guide working in Sri Lanka for <a href="http://www.intrepidtravel.com" target="_blank">Intrepid Travel</a>. A native of Haputale, in the lush biodiversity of the Uva Province in the mountainous centre of the country, Bruno has for years helped visitors understand the country’s tumultuous present in terms of its folklore-rich past. We welcome Bruno’s nomination as well, recognition of the outstanding local guides employed by Intrepid on its tours.</p>

<p>One week ago, <a href="http://www.ecotourism.org" target="_blank">The International Ecotourism Society</a> (TIES) announced Michelle Rodrigues as its newest Travel Ambassador. Michelle, born and raised in New York City but now resident in Florida, USA, was at the time also a project manager and content editor for the <a href="http://www.whl-group.com" target="_blank">WHL Group</a> in its North America and the Caribbean Regional Office when it was based in Miami.</p>
<h3>Promoting Responsible Travel</h3>
<p>The <a href="http://www.ecotourism.org/site/c.orLQKXPCLmF/b.5257211/k.D5E9/Travel_Ambassador_Program__The_International_Ecotourism_Society.htm" target="_blank">Travel Ambassador Program</a> is a brainchild of TIES, &#8220;the world&#8217;s oldest and largest international ecotourism association,&#8221; which plays a pivotal role as a &#8220;global source of knowledge and advocacy uniting communities, conservation and sustainable travel.&#8221;</p>
<p>Only 10 Travel Ambassadors are identified each year to help empower &#8220;travellers to &#8216;be the change&#8217; by spreading the word about ecotourism and responsible travel.&#8221; They become local and regional spokespeople who &#8220;inspire people to make travel choices that positively impact their communities, the environment and the future of travel and tourism.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really excited about this opportunity to branch out to a larger audience of people who are truly concerned with the impact they make on communities and the environment while travelling,&#8221; said Michelle.</p>
<h3>A Confluence of Responsibilities</h3>
<p>As a strong presence for the WHL Group in North America and the Caribbean, Michelle worked daily on behalf of <a href="http://www.whl.travel" target="_blank">whl.travel</a> to create new opportunities for local tour operators looking to reach global markets with their products and services. Michelle was also very involved with WHL Consulting as a Web marketing and media specialist.</p>
<p>Her new responsibilities as a Travel Ambassador were a perfect match. Working with a variety of local and global travel vendors, she has come in contact with many cultures, and deepened a resolve to help promote the growth of local businesses while sustaining the world as a whole.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s great to be able to connect my WHL Group work with my role as a Travel Ambassador,&#8221; continued Michelle. &#8220;In both cases, I&#8217;m able to reach more people than ever before and bring light to issues that people really become passionate about. I&#8217;m introducing them to places they can experience while making a minimal effect on the environment and promoting local and responsible tourism.&#8221;</p>
<p>Michelle was just one of several growing connections between the WHL Group and TIES, two organisations busy at the forefront of promoting fun, local and responsible travel that is, today, what tourism will be tomorrow: experiential, conscientious and sustainable. <p>Michelle completed her undergraduate degree at Florida International University with a major in hospitality management and travel and a minor in journalism. Michelle is committed to travel as a means of exploring new cultures and foods, a passion that she also pursues at home, often in her own kitchen trying out new flavours and recipes. Michelle also volunteers for <a href="http://www.komen.org" target="_blank">Susan G. Komen for the Cure</a>, formerly known as the Susan G. <h3>Slovenian Tourism Forum</h3>
<p>The Sejalec awards are designed to stimulate innovation by rewarding creativity in tourist product in Slovenia. They are announced every year at the Slovenian Tourism Forum, where leaders and experts in the travel industry meet to discuss present policy and future developments in Slovenian tourism.</p>
<p>At the 2009 Slovenian Tourism Forum, in light of changing travel trends and the Slovenian government&#8217;s adoption of a new tourism policy, special attention was paid to the issues of green and sustainable tourism development. In fact, perhaps chief among the many distinguished guests was Mr Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General (ad interim) of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), present to  speak about the important <a href="http://www.etc-corporate.org/resources/uploads/20091023_Symposium_Conclusions.pdf" target="_blank">conclusions</a> of the UNWTO/European Travel Commission symposium on Tourism &amp; Travel in the Green Economy, held a few months prior in Gothenburg, Sweden.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tourism is one of the main global economy sectors that makes an essential contribution to national and local economies around the world by diminishing poverty, creating new jobs and facilitating investments and trade,&#8221; said Mr Rifai during his address. &#8220;The current economic challenges constitute a strategic opportunity for tourism to become the key factor in the transition toward green economy through enhancing its sustainability.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr Dimitrij Piciga, Director of the <a href="http://www.slovenia.info/?lng=2" target="_blank">Slovenian Tourist Board</a>, looking at Slovenia&#8217;s road ahead, agreed: &#8220;Slovenian Tourist Board not only wishes to be the initiator of the green way of thinking but also of taking green action in Slovenian tourism. We are aware that green behaviour is not just a short-term trend but rather a long-term precondition for the preservation of Slovenia&#8217;s wealth and tourism, on one hand, and one of the key competitive criteria concerning its position on the world tourist map, on the other.&#8221;</p>
<h3>An Alpine Melody Sings Strong</h3>
<p>Given the commendable shift in Slovenian tourism priorities, the recognition accorded to a tour product carefully prepared by Spin Travel is high praise indeed. And so it should be: the eight-hour tour takes in two gorgeous and remote valleys in the Bled vicinity rarely visited by outsiders.</p>

<p>First, along the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radovna_Valley" target="_blank">Radovna River</a>, visitors work firsthand with Marko as he demonstrates the herder&#8217;s lifestyle, including caring for sheep in his Alpine paradise and then shearing them for the raw material that goes into creating fantastic homespun wool products.</p>
<p>Further along, on the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokljuka" target="_blank">Pokljuka plateau</a>, tour-takers meet the only living traditional herdsman on the plateau. A sit with him over a classic Alpine feast of dried sausage, homemade cheese, <em><a href="http://www.slovenia.info/en/recepti/Bohinj-zaseka.htm?recepti=9373&amp;lng=2" target="_blank">zaseka</a></em> and local spirits allows for full appreciation of the stunning panoramic backdrop of <a href="http://www.tnp.si/national_park/" target="_blank">Triglav National Park</a>. Earlier, during a walk with a specialist in local agriculture, fresh Alpine herbs picked in the field are used to make a real Alpine tea.</p>
<p>Of course, in keeping with the principles of responsible community-based tourism, the hosts benefit from the Alpine Melody tours as much as the visitors. Not only is there the vital but intangible satisfaction of having welcomed people from many faraway lands to experience a little of the traditional and natural local lifestyle, but there is a share in the fees charged for the tour. <p>Boracay Hills was originally the residence of the Swiss Ambassador to the Philippines, but has been lovingly remodeled as a private and quiet hideaway retreat by its new owners, the Clayton-Atancio family, including Helen and Cris Atanacio and Helen&#8217;s father, stepmother and sister, respectively Brian, Brigitte and Sue Clayton. Their efforts have turned a 3,000-square-metre tropical garden into a haven complete with a large pool, hammocks, loungers and spa area. In the main house, the 10 rooms, each one different from the others, quietly integrate modern amenities with local materials.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t take our word for it. All of the recent awards are based purely on guest feedback and travel-agent choices. A quick gander at the <a href="http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g294260-d556005-Reviews-Boracay_Hills-Boracay_Visayas.html" target="_blank">hotel reviews on TripAdvisor</a> tells the whole story. Of the 143 comments, of which 95% are positive (actually most are &#8216;excellent&#8217;), good value for money, superb service and a readiness to make visitors&#8217; vacations perfect are constant refrains.</p>

<p>On 3 November, the <a href="http://www.whl-group.com" target="_blank">WHL Group</a>, the parent company of whl.travel, was identified as one of <a href="http://www.drv.de/drv/der-drv/aktuelles/detail.html?tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=5001&amp;tx_ttnews%5BbackPid%5D=1&amp;cHash=6e4cc46037" target="_blank">five nominees</a> (linked article is in German only, as is this <a href="http://www.drv.de/presse/bild-videoarchiv/ecotrophea-2009-die-nominierten.html" target="_blank">video</a>) shortlisted to win the <a href="http://www.ecotrophea.de" target="_blank">EcoTrophea 2009</a>, the <a href="http://www.drv.de" target="_blank">German Travel Association</a> (or DRV) International Environmental Award. <p>The EcoTrophea prize has been awarded annually since 1987 by the DRV for &#8220;innovative, high-impact and exemplary environmental protection projects in tourism&#8221;.</p>
<p>The 2009 winner (alas, not the WHL Group) was announced on 4 December at the 59th DRV Annual Congress in Egypt. The DRV Environment Jury identified five outstanding projects, from which the winner was selected.</p>
<p>&#8220;[German] travel experts can then vote for their favourites,&#8221; explained Dr. Peter Zimmer, Chairman of the DRV Environment Committee. &#8220;The direct participation of travel experts is an advantage for all sides. It draws heightened attention to pioneers in the travel industry who contribute through their projects to promoting both environmental protection and tourism and also set an excellent example.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="color: #ffffff;"> </span>With a little luck, by early 2010, Lee Sheridan believes his company, <a href="http://www.vientiane-hotel-link.com/aboutus" target="_blank">Teamworkz</a>, the whl.travel local partner in <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?page_id=2629" target="_blank">Laos</a>, will have processed US$1 million worth of travel bookings through three Laos destination websites (Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane). Perhaps even more impressive than the gross numbers is the volume it represents: As of 10 October 2009, with completed bookings totalling almost US$800,000 and an average transaction valued at a few pennies more than US$115, that&#8217;s nearly 7000 bookings in just four years.</p>

<p>&#8220;Along with this, the three websites in Laos have already surpassed more than 100,000 unique visitors this year,&#8221; Sheridan enthused. &#8220;The Luang Prabang site alone has received over 60,000 unique visitors this year so far, and with our high season just starting, we may be able to reach 100,000 unique visitors for this one site in 2009.&#8221;</p>
<p>All in all, that&#8217;s not bad at all for a young company in an off-the-beaten-path nation notable for its least developed country status.</p>
<h3>Many Twists and Turns</h3>
<p>While there&#8217;s no contesting Sheridan&#8217;s golden touch today in Lao tourism, it was by no means a given that he should end where he is.</p>

<p>&#8220;My studies were in human geography,&#8221; confessed Sheridan. &#8220;There was nothing specifically on tourism, but I studied a lot on Third World development in Southeast Asia. I was interested in tourism and I did my thesis on that in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko_Pha_Ngan" target="_blank">Koh Pha Ngan</a>. After university I took a year out and spent a lot of time on Thai beaches. Then I headed up to Laos on a visa run, to extend my Thai visa. I got to a town called Vang Vieng and basically, I&#8217;m not entirely sure how, I got a job as a kayaking guide on the river there. I had never done kayaking before and never been a guide before, but I ended up working with them for about four months.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, almost a decade later and a few twists and turns further down the river of life, he&#8217;s still in Laos. And, judging by his enthusiasm for the country and the energy he puts into helping build the kind of national tourism industry that will help keep it beautiful, he must love it.</p>
<h3>Tapping the whl.travel Vein</h3>
<p>Sheridan found his way into the whl.travel fold in mid 2005 through a website he started called <a href="http://www.mekongspirit.com" target="_blank">mekongspirit.com</a>. &#8220;At the time there were three Laos sites being managed by the local Hotel and Restaurant Association, which weren&#8217;t performing particularly well. They were averaging one booking a day in total from the three sites and complaining that this was too much work for them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sheridan started operation of these sites in November 2005 as the local partner of whl.travel. &#8220;It was very slow at the start.&#8221; The sites were averaging one or two bookings a day, but whl.travel was still in its infancy and &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t putting enough resources into being an local partner as I should have at the time,&#8221; Sheridan recalled.</p>
<p>&#8220;The turn-around came with the development of whl.travel as an organization, which encouraged me to invest a lot more in the whl.travel side of things. It&#8217;s now the main part of my company. Most of my resources and my staff are working on being the whl.travel partner, whereas at the start it was only a small aspect of what I was trying to do. Now we&#8217;re getting a rough average of between 15 and 20 bookings a day and we perform pretty well in search engines – we&#8217;re basically number one for Laos sites in Google.&#8221;</p>
<h3>A Broad Portfolio</h3>
<p>Despite Sheridan&#8217;s focus on travel bookings through whl.travel, his Teamworkz work stretches into tourism consulting in sustainable tourism. &#8220;I believe that responsible tourism is something we need to promote, something good. But finding the right way to push this or develop it is another matter altogether. It&#8217;s going to take time.&#8221;</p>

<p>Sheridan hasn&#8217;t been halting in his efforts to do the right thing. From 2006 to mid-2008, he worked for a project called <a href="http://www.stayanotherday.org" target="_blank">Stay Another Day</a>, which started off in Siem Reap (Cambodia) as something called Things to Do Beside the Temples. &#8220;The whole idea was to get people to stay a bit longer, realise that there was more to do than just Angkor Wat. It was more about experiential travel, connecting with different organizations that would not necessarily normally be involved in tourism – some of the local development organizations and NGOs that would benefit from increased exposure, additional revenue sources through tourism. From there we expanded this into Laos. Luang Prabang was in a similar situation at the time, where a lot of people just went to the temples. It proved very successful, so we expanded it across Laos and across Cambodia and introduced it to Vietnam as well.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since then, Sheridan has worked on a number of other projects to develop capacity, long-term tourism development strategies, long-term marketing strategies and even some destination development work.</p>
<p>One recent project is with the <a href="http://www.enterprisechallengefund.org/ecfund/Uploadfile/FINAL%20CStudy_Teamworkz%282%29.pdf" target="_blank">Enterprise Challenge Fund</a> (ECF), a part of <a href="http://www.ausaid.gov.au" target="_blank">AusAid</a> that focuses on supporting the private sector. &#8220;I applied for a grant from the ECF to expand my whl.travel operations in Laos, which would include covering three new provinces as well as building hotel websites for each and every one of the hotels I work with in Laos.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yet another undertaking is in cooperation with <a href="http://www.ecotourismlaos.com" target="_blank">Ecotourism Laos</a>, which recently won Planeta&#8217;s <a href="http://planeta.wikispaces.com/spotlightaward" target="_blank">Ecotourism Spotlight Award</a> for the third consecutive year. &#8220;Ecotourismlaos.com has also just signed an affiliate deal with us and are now selling all the <a href="http://www.ecotourismlaos.com/accomodation/index.html" target="_blank">accommodation providers</a> we work with in Laos,&#8221; reported Sheridan.</p>
<h3>Reward and Recognition</h3>
<p>Sheridan&#8217;s dynamism has not gone unnoticed by the whl.travel network. At the July 2009 <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=1064" target="_blank">whl.travel Asia-Pacific Regional conference</a>, Teamworkz Consulting was officially announced as the whl.travel <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=2656" target="_blank">Franchisee of the Year 2008-2009</a>, winner of a Reward and Recognition program for its work in Vientiane, Laos.</p>
<p>&#8220;I like this program a lot!&#8221; admitted Sheridan. &#8220;Personally, I&#8217;m an extremely competitive person, so as soon as they bring out anything with lead tables in it, I want to be the top of it. Anything I do I&#8217;m extremely competitive.&#8221;</p>
<p>Teamworkz, which could just as easily have earned its laurels for its labours in Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng, both also in Laos, also owns and operates <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=2656#teamworkz" target="_blank">five other sites in Laos and seven in Thailand</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;Thailand is huge potential,&#8221; said Sheridan. &#8220;The number of visitors and number of destinations is huge, but there&#8217;s also a lot of competition. In Laos, I&#8217;m very lucky. I&#8217;m one of the very few people who can offer any variety of hotels. I&#8217;ve managed to secure the marketplace. But in Thailand I&#8217;m competing with a lot bigger players who&#8217;ve been established for a lot longer. It&#8217;s something that&#8217;s going to take a lot of time.&#8221;</p>

<p>“An amazing effort,” comment Rob Shortland, whl.travel Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific. “Amazing especially when you consider they also won two of the three category awards (service and web marketing). They really worked hard for this over the last 12-18 months and it shows in their results, as well as in the growth of their business. A great job and well done.”</p>
<h3>Reward and Recognition</h3>
<p>The whl.travel Reward and Recognition (R&amp;R) program is designed to encourage, recognize and reward franchise partners who show improvement in their pursuit of excellence in areas deemed important to the growth and wellbeing of the network, all in the spirit of friendly competition. The 2008-2009 program focused on three categories: sustainability (improvements in the quality and quantity of product with <a href="http://www.whl.travel/sustainable_tourism" target="_blank">Caring for the Destination</a> ratings); service standards (the ability of each franchisee to hit and surpass the 95% success level for responding to client queries within 24 hours, and to keep published rates current); and Web marketing. There were quarterly awards in each category, category leaders for the year and top honours given to the Franchisee of the Year.</p>
<p>Teamworkz Consulting basically dominated the rankings. While Vientiane sat atop the leader board, the next three positions were filled by Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and <a href="http://www.phuket-hotel-link.com" target="_blank">Phuket</a> (Thailand), and seven of the top eight spots included <a href="http://www.samui-hotel-link.com" target="_blank">Koh Samui</a> and <a href="http://www.chiang-mai-hotel-link.com" target="_blank">Chiang Mai</a> (both in Thailand) – all operated by Teamworkz. Only the whl.travel local partner in <a href="http://www.vanuatu-hotels.vu" target="_blank">Vanuatu</a> – the 2007-2008 whl.travel Franchisee of the Year – broke the run with its fifth-place finish tying with Luang Prabang as winner of the service category of the year. All 10 live sites in Laos and Thailand under Teamworkz management swept the Web marketing category for the year, while the local partner in <a href="http://www.marmaris-datca.travel" target="_blank">Marmaris-Datça</a>, Turkey (10th overall), was category leader for the year in sustainability, 87% of its accommodations and tours meriting a Caring for the Destination ranking.</p>
<p>“As much as I would like to take all the credit,” said <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=2696" target="_blank">Lee Sheridan</a>, managing director of Teamworkz, “I have to admit that my team of Mouk, Anne, Vong, Phansee and Thouni have done all the hard work. A big thanks to them!! They are the ones who consistently demonstrate the <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=836" target="_blank">power of the local connection</a>.”</p>
<p>The R&amp;R program rules will change in 2009-2010 based on important feedback from the local partners. The goal however remains the same: to ‘encourage, recognize and reward’. After all, “Who cares if we win or not again?” said John Nicholls, owner and operator of Vanuatu Hotels. “This R&amp;R competition has greater rewards for all of us in the whl.travel organisation than a single franchisee winning a prize. It is an essential motivator for all of us to improve.”</p>

<p>As <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=1217" target="_blank">previously reported</a>, the <a href="http://geotourism.changemakers.com/geotourismchallenge" target="_blank">2009 Geotourism Challenge: Power of Place – Sustaining the Future of Destinations</a>, jointly sponsored by the <a href="http://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/sustainable/" target="_blank">National Geographic Centre for Sustainable Development</a> and <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=25" target="_blank">Ashoka’s Changemakers</a>, in partnership with <a href="http://www.whl.travel" target="_blank">whl.travel</a>, garnered 611 entries from 81 countries (double the number received in the first Geotourism Challenge 2008), from which a panel of expert judges – including a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a co-founder of Lonely Planet and the editor of National Geographic Traveler magazine – selected <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=1217#finalists" target="_blank">10 finalists</a>.</p>
<p>The judges’ choices brought to the fore the kinds of innovators – individuals and organizations – who, through tourism, work to sustain or enhance the unique character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage and the wellbeing of its residents. This direct and indirect support of good destination stewardship is called geotourism.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are trying to identify organisations doing great things…,&#8221; <a href="http://www.thetravelword.com/?p=362" target="_blank">commented Len Cordiner</a>, CEO of whl.travel. &#8220;This is not just to celebrate the innovation and commitment of the people and organisations involved, but most importantly to provide a window on ways we can all play a role to save what is left [of the planet].&#8221;</p>
<p>The 10 finalists then took to the warewaves to draw public attention to their work. Online voting took place during a four-week stretch of summer that ended on 12 August 2009 and pushed the following three initiatives to the top, takers of US$5000 each and a lot of global kudos:</p>

<li><a href="http://www.natureair.com" target="_blank">NatureAir</a> – The programs of NatureAir – Costa Rica&#8217;s 100% carbon-neutral airline – limit emissions, pay for offsets and reduce company dependence on fuel in the air and on the ground.</li>

<li><a href="http://www.pepyride.org" target="_blank">PEPY</a> – PEPY is a busy educational volunteer tourist program in Cambodia. PEPY offers responsible voluntourism adventures, designed with rural community input, providing substantial funding for educational programs in rural Cambodia and inspiring life changes in travellers. </ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.wikiloc.com" target="_blank">Wikiloc</a> – Wikiloc, based out of Girona, Spain, provides local communities with an effective way first to create their own maps of georeferenced trails and points of interest and then to show them off in an honest fashion using digital maps on the Web and in Google Earth.</li>
</ul>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re excited to support three new innovators stretching the possibilities of geotourism,&#8221; said Charlie Brown, Changemakers&#8217; executive director. &#8220;These winners are pushing us closer to realizing and sustaining a kind of travel that will enrich cultures and environments across the globe.&#8221;</p>

Tourtellot, director of National Geographic&#8217;s Center for Sustainable Destinations, said &#8220;The winners are outstanding examples of geotourism practices that extend to good destination stewardship. They are committed to conserving and enhancing the quality of their locales while benefiting local people and providing visitors with authentic experiences. Geotourism is no flash in the pan: Travelers around the globe are seeking it out in both rural and urban settings. We’re delighted to showcase the winners and runners-up who are leading the way.&#8221;</p>

<p>In addition to the high honours of the Geotourism Challenge, other prizes were on offer to all entries, whether or not they made it to the finals. One of these is the <a href="http://geotourism.changemakers.com/geotourismchallenge/whlintrepidprize" target="_blank">Urban Adventures Prize</a>.  Initially called the whl.travel/Intrepid Travel prize, it is co-sponsored by <a href="http://www.intrepidtravel.com" target="_blank">Intrepid Travel</a> and <a href="http://www.whl.travel" target="_blank">WHL Group</a>, who recently launched a joint venture called <a href="http://www.urbanadventures.com" target="_blank">Urban Adventures</a>, a new style of travel experience for those who want to get off the beaten path and really connect with a destination. Urban Adventures can be as short as a couple of hours or as long as a whole day, but in every case they take you to interesting places to meet locals and really see what makes the place tick.</p>

<p>In keeping with the companies’ shared deep commitment to sustainable travel and to providing travel experiences that engage, enrich and inspire, the Urban Adventures Prize rewards three outstanding local tour operators/travel organisations that best demonstrate how to integrate the ‘Power of Place’ into a travel experience – great examples of experiential travel product built around the unique qualities and core assets of a place.</p>
<p>Although many could also easily have prevailed, the 2009 winners, each of whom receive US$2000 and publicity support that reaches a collective audience of 450,000 travellers, are:</p>

<li><a href="http://www.gertoger.org" target="_blank">Ger to Ger</a> – In Mongolia, Ger to Ger offers amazing expeditions incorporating unique insights into the lives of local people along the nomadic routes travelled. They use tourism as a catalyst for sustainable poverty alleviation, rural economic development and community-initiated health, cultural and natural resource management.</li>

<ul>
<li><a href="http://www.contexttravel.com" target="_blank">Context Travel</a> – Based in the United States, Context Travel&#8217;s innovative walking seminars (tours) are led by architects, historians and art historians, who take visitors on unique trips through urban surroundings. Their Sustainable Travel Initiated looks for ways to mitigate the negative impact of tourism on the social, economic and cultural life of key cities in Europe and the U.S.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://geotourism.changemakers.com/en-us/node/24080" target="_blank">Cobati</a> – The Community Based Tourism Initiative of Uganda works in unique cultural sites and in rural homestay development in villages bordering conservation areas. Cobati also uses tourism initiatives to train and mentor rural women in artisanal, culinary and hospitality skills as a means of supplementing their household incomes.</li>
</ul>

<h3>2009 Tourdust Scholarship</h3>
<p>Like the Urban Adventures Prize, the <a href="http://geotourism.changemakers.com/geotourismchallenge/tourdustscholarship" target="_blank">Tourdust Scholarship</a> was open to all Geotourism Challenge entries, but looked specifically at rewarding three socially responsible geotourism businesses (such as tour operators and activity guides) with a cash reward and mentorship designed to help them grow their businesses internationally.</p>

The holistic approach involves protecting the river environment and supporting the local economy by working against reckless development and damming through the empowerment of local communities reliant financially on the river’s health.</li>
