Galaktoboureko in Athens, Greece
Contributed by Charles Berthault (Athens Urban Adventures and whl.travel Athens)
I recommend galaktoboureko, which is an Oriental dessert (they have something similar in Turkey, Syria and Lebanon). Many chefs are secretive about their recipes for this, but it is usually made of cream (usually cream of wheat) with a hint of lemon and layers of filo pastry dough at the top and bottom. You can add syrup or cinnamon on top.

Butter Tarts in Toronto, Canada
Contributed by Jason Kucherawy (Toronto Urban Adventures)
One food for which Canada is known is a dessert called a ‘butter tart.’ I buy them regularly from a Ukrainian-Canadian bakery in St Lawrence Market in the old part of Toronto.
Butter tarts were the favourite treat of our first prime minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, more than 100 years ago and the very best ones are made by my mother. No joke.
What are they like? Imagine a pecan pie shrunk down to tart size and then remove the pecans. Without pecans there’s more room for the sweet deliciousness.
I love watching people’s faces when they bite into a butter tart for the first time. It’s like they’re discovering what taste buds are for.

Pakistan has many sweets and desserts. Some of the most popular are gulab jamun (fried dough balls in a syrup flavoured with cardamom and rosewater or saffron), barfi (condensed milk and sugar flavoured with fruit, nuts or spices) and various kinds of halwa.

For dessert, we serve torta negra (like an Italian panettone) and dulce de lechosa, which is an easy-to-prepare papaya dessert made from green papaya, sugar, papelón and cloves. They are typically served at Christmas.
