Photo of the Year: the Best of a Year in Local Travel Pictures

After a year and 52 pictures, we are proud to present our Photo of the Year, the image that most captured the imagine of The Travel Word and a group of external judges: the Dazzling Colours of Sunset, the Maldives. Exactly one year ago, we started featuring one picture each week on The Travel Word. We spotlighted favourite images pulled from our growing collections on Flickr. We also asked the photographer or owner to submit a short and revealing text about it. These text-image combinations have proven to be very popular.

Autumn Activities: Getting a High from the Low Season

As summer takes its final bow (or winter, depending on which end of the planet you’re standing), it’s easy to think of the months ahead as a bit of a barren travel wasteland. Please don’t! Not only are off-season holidays far from the madding crowd more relaxed and easier on the wallet, but they take advantage of milder temperatures for outdoor pursuits that can be not all that fun when it’s just too darn hot… or cold! Here we put the ‘off’ season myth to bed with a selection of what to do and where after summer’s curtain call.

Photo of the Week: Yummy Penny Bun Mushrooms in Latvia

The photo was taken in my mother’s yard in Jelgava, Latvia, in early September (2006), which, is peak time for picking mushrooms. We had just returned from the woods. Nothing tastes better than homemade mushroom sauce. Our local Latvian versions use various kinds of mushrooms found in the forests, but the most popular, of course, are penny buns, or ‘bennies.’
