Jinja, in eastern Uganda, is fast securing its place as one of Africa’s hottest destinations. Dynamic yet easygoing, this town set on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake, is just a few kilometres from the Source of the Nile Gardens, the outlet that feeds the northern flow of the White Nile on its long journey to the Mediterranean Sea. This is just one of its many allures, complementing a charming and relaxed atmosphere, striking flora and fauna and multitudes of attractions.

Adventure seekers enjoy white-water rafting on the mighty rapids of the River Nile near Jinja, Uganda

Jinja is a key stop for visitors in Uganda because of its reputation as the Adventure Capital of East Africa. Jinja tours and adventure activities certainly do not disappoint. Adrenaline junkies can get their fix white-water rafting, quad-biking or extreme rafting and river surfing, all of which take place near the Bujagali Falls, famed for producing thunderous white rapids.

But there’s another side of Jinja too, one rooted in its history as an old trading town surrounded by bucolic villages and dominated by superb views of Lake Victoria. Its peaceful, tree-lined avenues, eco- and river lodges and quaint Jinja hotels add to its hospitable ambience and ensure there is something for everyone.

www.jinja-hotels.travel is the second whl.travel portal launched by The Far Horizon in Uganda. It follows Kampala and Entebbe and the team will soon be launching a third website covering Western Uganda.

Just visible to the left is the Grade 6 'Retrospect' rapid.

Speaking for the Far Horizon team, Patrick Shah says, “Sustainable tourism is not just a fad. Without the engagement and support of the local communities and a focused, long-term strategy for the protection of the environment at all levels of government Africa’s wild places will be gone in a few decades.” Patrick, along with Nicola, Steven and Stella, “are enthusiastic and grateful for the opportunity to tie together our fascination with travel and the Internet through our partnership with whl.travel.”
