TAZAMA HAPA CHINI UJUMBE HUU KWA KISWAHILI / SEE BELOW FOR THIS MESSAGE IN SWAHILI

Adoringly known as ‘Dar’ by enthusiasts, Dar es Salaam, the former capital but still premier city of Tanzania, borders the warm Indian Ocean. Once a small, Swahili fishing village located in the centre of the East African coastline, Dar now leads Tanzanian access to one of the world’s most important sea routes.

Meaning ‘haven of peace’ in Arabic, Dar is a diverse and bustling port with a myriad of things to see and do. Many travellers mistakenly overlook Dar, thinking of it as no more than a quick stopover before heading to destinations deemed more exotic, such as Zanzibar, Mafia Island or the animal-rich lands of the interior country. This is a shame, as Dar has its own special dynamism and there are numerous attractions well worth a visit.

Taking in the sights, smells and sounds of the city on a stroll to the Kariakoo Market or Kivukoni Front’s fish market is an excellent way to revel in the colours and flavours of the city. Eating freshly caught fish at the waterfront and visiting Dar’s peaceful botanical gardens are also exceptional ways to spend an afternoon. Vestiges of the city’s German and English 19th-century history remain visible in the beautiful colonial architecture and landmarks, which include St. Joseph’s Cathedral, the Old State House and the Askari Monument, commemorating the fallen African soldiers of World War I with an inscription written by Rudyard Kipling. These attractions can be discovered as part of a Dar es Salaam city tour or at your own leisure.

There are many other exciting activities to experience on a Tanzanian holiday. Once in Dar, gorgeous white beaches and national parks are almost literally at your fingertips. Historic Zanzibar is a mere 45 km out to sea and easily reachable by regular boat service, while south of the city are pristine, secluded stretches of coast and incredible Mafia Island hotels. Further afield, in southern Tanzania is the World Heritage-listed Selous Game Reserve, Africa’s largest protected game reserve, where a Selous Safari will put you in the midst of Africa in her natural beauty. The Mikumi and Udzungwa Mountain national parks also boast exceptional wildlife, best appreciated on a game drive. These and other Dar es Salaam tours all make for incredible excursions.

www.tanzania-tours.com now links travellers directly with Ayaz and Nurez Bandali and the local team from Waterbuck Safaris. Speaking on behalf of the team, Ayaz Bandali says, “We are delighted to come aboard and work with whl.travel. It’s an electrifying project and as per the market trend, which is moving towards online shopping, we believe we are on the right track. Tourism permits us to meet diverse people from various parts of the world encompassing assorted backgrounds, rituals and customs. It is bringing people from poles apart to mingle and blend that allow us to grow and foster an appreciation for nature, a gift to mankind.”

Dar es Salaam is the gateway to Tanzania, as well as other captivating African destinations like Kenya, Madagascar and South Africa.
