Tucked up against Kenya’s southern border with Tanzania like the northern continuation of the latter’s Serengeti National Park game reserve is Masai Mara, the quintessential African safari destination. Notably it is home to the Big Five (lions, rhinoceros, leopards, elephants and buffalos) and in the path of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration, when millions of zebra, wildebeest and gazelle drift from the Serengeti in search of water and food. The Masai Mara’s extensive savannah is also home to the Maasai people, whose fascinating culture is intimately connected with their lands. It is truly a privilege to be able to take in the traditional dances and customs of the people that lent their name to this vast national reserve.

No visit to Eastern Africa would be complete without a safari through ‘the Mara,’ as locals call it – the sprawling plains inhabited by Africa’s big cats and other rare species. Depending on one’s taste for adventure and budget, a safari could run as short as one afternoon, like on the Day Trip to Hell’s Gate National Park excursion, to as long as 24 days, taking in three surrounding countries on the Safari in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania tour. Whatever fits the bill, travellers should always abide by both national park regulations and tour guide recommendations, not only for personal safety but to protect this very fragile ecosystem and, in recent years, its declining numbers of large animals (elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos).

Each day, after a thrilling expedition full of unforgettable memories and once-in-a-lifetime photos, the return to the hospitality of Masai Mara accommodation is nothing short of heavenly. Fortunately, there are plenty of lodges and tented camps to meet the needs of travellers of all stripes. When in search of a special touch, the privately operated Rekero Camp is run in part by members of the Maasai community to ensure that tourism in the region is of direct benefit to the locals.

The whl.travel local connection in the Masai Mara, Africa Veterans Safaris Ltd., is eager to bring ideas about sustainable tourism to the international stage. Martin Kiguru, the company’s Director of Operations, grew up on the rural outskirts of the Masai Mara and has a true emotional attachment to the people and wildlife unique to his home. “Africa Veterans Safaris Ltd is extremely excited to join the whl.travel family in order to promote our destination Masai Mara responsibly,” he said.
